A book will get you a date.

Meet Sheilah Birgen, m:Lab East Africa’s CEO sharing with me about her love for books and why they are the best gifts.

Are you currently reading anything?

Yes. Anderson Cooper’s Dispatches from the Edge. It’s about Anderson’s journey as a journalist, his family, his lowest and highest points as a reporter. It is literally like going behind the scenes with him on his reporting assignments. It is quite striking, heartfelt, honest, engrossing and utterly interesting.

Have you always loved reading books?

Yes I have and my interests have grown as I’ve grown older.

What genre of books do you mostly enjoy reading?

I don’t have a specific genre. I am so random, like I only read romantic novels in February. The rest of the year, I pretty much read anything ranging from Biographies, memoirs, inspiration, comics, business and sometimes academic books.

Do you have a favorite book?

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, it’s a wonderful book. Every time I feel like I am doubting myself I just read it. I probably can recite it.

What books are you dying to get your hands on?

Oh my.. Well, there are 3 that I really want to read hopefully before the end of this month. I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma and This Child Will Be Great by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Why do you think books are the best gifts?

Books tend to share much more than just knowledge. The fact that someone gives me a book means that he or she trusts that I am willing to share my time to read it. It’s also not a one off gift. You can always revisit the gift. A book can literally get you a second date, a third and so on, if you’re single.

Where do you get your books from?

Everywhere. The streets, bookstores, online stores and friends.

What are your hobbies?

I like playing with hardwares in Technology, obviously reading, watching a lot of sports and playing Xbox from time to time.

What mantra do you live by?

Manners maketh man. I believe your actions define who you are.

What do you think? Come on, say something.
